Treating Carpet Stains

May 21, 2010 | | Comments 0

Carpet stains happen to all of us no matter whether we have children or pets.  It could be a spilled glass of wine, food, juice, dirt, or ash from the fireplace.

It is so annoying to see your beautiful white carpets with a stain, no matter how small, in the middle of them.

Sure, you can call a professional carpet cleaning company and get them to send their technicians out with their industrial carpet steam cleaners.  This will run you at least $100 for a house call and depending on your stain (including what was actually spilled) it could be a lot more.

Wait!  Try getting it up yourself.  Here are some tips you can use to help get your carpet back in order.

Clean Spills Up Immediately

The sooner you take care of a stain the easier it will be to remove.  If the stain on the carpet is recent there is a good chance you will be able to take care of it.  Fresh spills can usually be cleaned with hot water and/ or the right chemicals.

Make certain you blot or dab the stain rather than rub it.  Rubbing a stain can make it worst and spread it out.

Taking a towel with hot water and blotting the stain, quickly, will make it less likely that the stain will have time to set into your carpet.  Do not blot it too much though.  You do not want to damage your carpet’s fibers.  If the stain will not come up after several attempts then it is time to find another approach.

Use Correct Materials

There are some very good items you can utilize in order to get hard stains off your carpets.  These include the use of rubbing alcohol, baking soda, and white vinegar.  If you get to a recent spill soon enough then these substances should be able to help you get it up.

You might want to consider putting these substances in a spray bottle instead of just dumping them on the stain.  Sometimes a large dose of cleaning chemicals can cause stains themselves.

You can go to the store and get some special chemicals to treat stains.  This is the more expensive way to go and many times they will do the same job that household items, as those just mentioned, can do.

If you do however want specialized chemicals then make sure you get the right kind.  Different cleaning products are good for specific spills and different applications.

Use A Rented Carpet Cleaning Machine

Renting a carpet cleaning machine can be useful in some cases.  The problem is that once you factor in the rental, chemicals, gas, and time you are paying close to what you would pay a professional carpet cleaning company to come out and handle it for you.

If you do decide to rent a carpet cleaning machine from a nearby supermarket or appliance store then make sure you have the store manager or an employee fully explain to you how to use the equipment.  You should thoroughly understand how to operate the device when you leave the store otherwise you are going to waste your time. Caution: do not use it to vacuum ash or a lot of dry dirt.  You will mess up the machine.

The three basic things you want to remember if you decide to do it yourself is  a) to pre-treat the stain b) get the water REALLY hot and c) slowly go over the stain a couple times.

Getting small to large stains up can be annoying and take work. If you need a professional carpet cleaning Anchorage company to do it for you then do not be afraid to ask them.  Make sure you give them as many details as you possibly can in order for them to give you an appropriate quote and have the right materials on hand to take care of it for you.  Giving them as much information as you possibly can will ensure they bring the perfect chemicals to get the stain up and get your carpets back to looking new.
