Should You Hire Someone to Clean Your Grout
Cleaning tile grout is a very necessary household chore that, unfortunately, gets put off far too often. People tend to let their grout go until it is almost black and they have no choice but to clean it or face the unpleasant task of replacing it. If you spent just a few minutes a day when you are taking your shower scrubbing your grout, you would never have to spend entire Saturdays on your hands and knees, rent heavy duty equipment, or hire professional grout cleaners to clean the most personal room in your home. Nevertheless, it is more likely that one of these options is what you will have to endure.
If you decide to clean your grout by hand then you are in for a long and grueling day of work. The only tools you will need are water, a medium bristled brush, a cleaning agent, and a damp cloth. The usual procedure is to dampen the grout with water and then add your grout cleaner. You should let the grout cleaner sit on the stained grout lines for up to thirty minutes and then start scrubbing. The worse the stains, the longer you will want to let the chemicals work. The medium bristled brush is necessary so that you have enough stiffness to really work at the grout, but not so much that you tear the grout up. After scrubbing you can rinse the grout lines with the damp cloth. You spend the entire time on your hands and knees and you end up with aching joints and an aching back. It is hard work, but it will be a job well done if you take your time.
If you want to clean your own grout but do not want to expend so much energy, you can rent tile and grout cleaning equipment, in much the same way as you rent carpet steam cleaners. A tile and grout cleaner will typically have a circular bottom piece that covers several brushes. There is usually a hose that delivers water under pressure and possibly a separate hose for the cleaning solution. Other setups require that you put the cleaner down on the floor separately. The water is sprayed at high pressure and the brushes scrub the tile and grout. Then, there is usually suction to take the waste water out to a sink or through a hose. This equipment is not easy to use and requires a lot of water, hose, and space. Most homeowners do not have the expertise to use it or the space to store it when not in use.
That leads them toward the last choice which is hiring a professional to do the job. The cost of professional grout cleaning can vary widely depending on the quality of the work. Make sure that you get the company to write out clearly what they are promising and what you expect so that there is no confusion later about whether or not the job was done satisfactorily. Once you get over the fact that you are letting strangers into your bathroom, you will most likely be pleased with the results that only professional grout cleaners can deliver.
