How to Safely Use a Floor Buffer
The first image conjured up with the use of floor buffers is one of a cartoon character being swung round and round whilst clinging onto the handle bars of an out of control floor buffer, desperately reaching for the controls to switch it off.
This, as a mater of fact, is one of the many accidents that can occur with a floor polisher, alas you won’t be swung round and round, however letting go of the handle bars whilst still on will result in the polisher having a merry little dance.
So here are some tips to ensure your usage of a regular floor or wood floor buffer goes according to plan with no unplanned “events”. Check the following if you want to know how to use a floor buffer.
Before using the Buffer
• Check the electrical cord and ensure it is untangled, and undamaged. (To avoid shocking experiences!)
• Before plugging it in check to see if the polishing or scrubbing pad is correctly attached, and fastened. (You don’t need that flying about)
• Turn all stud counters clockwise
Plug in the Buffer
• While holding the handlebars switch on the machine (DO NOT let go of the handlebars or you will be knocked down and chased by a polisher that’s out to get you!)
• Starting on the far side of the room and work towards the entrance in fan-like motions (Be aware of pets and loose objects as they do make dangerous flying objects, especially cats)
• Buff a single section at a time, remember buffers rotate clockwise, so allow it to lift a little on the left side for smoother left to right strokes (Or push down hard and look like a jack hammer operator)
• When moving the power cord use your strongest hand and ensure you have a good grip of the floor buffer before using your other hand to move the electrical cord. (Re-read the fist pointer above for when you can let go)
• Check the buffing pad or brush regularly, ensure that they are clean and clutter free (Do switch the machine off beforehand, there is no need for you to buff your face)
• Once done, clean all equipment and pack away neatly, hanging pads and brushes to dry. (Should you not, kids and pets may be tempted to try some cartoon inspired stunts)
And there you have it: Simple but effective points that will avoid all those unnecessarily accidents in the home whilst using floor buffers of any kind.
