Even if you vacuum daily and your carpets are stain free, there still may be bacteria and other pathogens in you carpet and that is why it is important to shampoo your carpets occasionally. Not only can bacteria cause illnesses and allergies to act up, they can also be responsible for some bad smells. Odor is caused by bacteria and in order to get rid of odors on fabrics or in your carpet, you need to kill the bacteria responsible. There are several ways that you can kill bacteria in your carpets.

The first way is with steam. Many people ask themselves, does steam cleaning carpet kill bacteria, and the answer is yes. But that answer is conditional on whether or not the steam is hot enough for long enough. You can get an aspiration of hot water from some steam cleaners, but the steam turns back into water almost instantly when it comes out of the machine. This is because the heater is not powerful enough to heat the water very high over 100 degrees Celsius. If you are going to rely on steam cleaning to kill your carpet bacteria, then you need to make sure that you will have a long continuous stream of very hot steam. Professional cleaning services like Dalworth Carpet Cleaning use industrial strength heaters to produce steam for cleaning and may be the way to go if you are concerned about bacteria.

Another way to kill bacteria is to use a homemade carpet remedy. A regular 5 percent vinegar solution that you buy at the grocery store will kill about ninety nine percent of the bacteria you commonly find in carpets. You can add the vinegar to your carpet steam cleaner instead of the brand name carpet cleaners and it will clean your carpets as well if not better. Vinegar is one of those homemade cleaning secrets that is good for almost anything.
