Average Carpet Pricing Tips

March 21, 2010 | | Comments 0

Finding the best carpet prices can be a daunting task for anyone thinking about carpeting or re-carpeting their home or office. When most people are shopping for carpet, they see the price listed per square foot and think that’s all there is to it; but there’s more to the cost of installing carpet than just the average cost of the carpet.

Besides average carpet price, you have to factor in installation and padding. People don’t first think of these extra expenses when they think about carpeting their home. Something else they often neglect to think about is the tear out and removal of the old carpet or the preparation of the room or floor to prepare for the installation.

Carpeting Price imageThe best game plan for carpet shopping is to first come up with a budget so you know what your price range will be when looking for carpet. The next thing you’ll want to do is get a measurement of the entire areas you’re wanting to carpet. Carpet is generally priced by the square foot. So when you enter a carpet store, you’ll see the prices listed per square foot. That price however, does not include installation or padding.

Padding is often overlooked as not being that important, but that just isn’t the case. Padding can significantly add to the enjoyment and even longevity of your carpet. Moreover, in many cases, a carpet manufacturer will not honor their carpets warranty if it is not installed over recommended padding. So make sure you get the correct padding; generally you want the padding to be no more than 7/16 inches in thickness.

As for carpet installation and padding prices, a generally rule of thumb is that you should add $1 onto the average carpet prices per square foot to include padding and installation. So if you find carpet that is listed for $2.35 per square foot, you can estimate the overall cost at $3.35 a sq foot. These average carpet prices does not include removal of the old carpeting however, and installation and padding prices will vary so the $1 rule is just a guide to help you find something close to your budget when shopping. Don’t forget to price in the cost of a decent carpet steam cleaner.
